Looks like they're finally going 2D gameplay in a 3D world with Sonic...

This might actually make up for "Sonic The Hedgehog" on 360/PS3.

I plan on getting it for the Wii.

Is this for the Wii? I'm guessing it's at least multi-console, and even though I own a 360, I'd still prefer it for the Wii.

I saw a clip from that that looked like a 3rd person fight against a few robots.
I also read from the site that it does seem to be 3D in movement, the shots just seem to be from an angle that makes it look like 2D gameplay.

I really hope somebody can prove me wrong.

It's in German but Google Translation mentions that it's going to be a cover story in both PLAY magazine and Official Nintendo Magazine.

Looks nice, but I hope it's better than Sonic Adventure rush or whatever you call that crap. My favorite Sonic game stands as SA2, this probably won't change that.

My favorite one was SA1 on the Dreamcast.

Never got a chance to really play SA DX that much.

I'm very old-school when it comes to Sonic.  My favorites are Sonic 1 - Sonic & Knuckles.  I'm hoping this will be similar to MMX8 in gameplay, too.  I want 2D movement back.

I agree on the former. Halfway on the latter. I liked "What I'm Made Of", but I like "His World" more.

Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are my 2D favorites. Sonic 2 being a little bit more.

I seem to replay Sonic 2 alot more than the others.

As far as 2D Sonic games go, I'd have to say Sonic 3 and Knuckles is my all time favorite.
As for 3D Sonic games, I greatly enjoyed SA2B. SADXDC was enjoyable. SH was... playable at best. Shadow was funny at some points, never fun to play though. SatSR gave me AIDS.

UUh-greeeeeed. I have completely lost faith. With each game that they release, I think that it's going to redeem Sonic... and it doesn't. The only thing that brings Sonic even close to his roots is SSBB, because he's the only character from the series, and his stage/some of his music is from the origional.

Now, if SEGA really wanted to go back to their roots and make some sick bank while at it, they would mash Sonic 1, 2, 3, and Knuckles together into a 3D side scrolling masterpiece... but we all know that will never happen.

I really hope that video is using artful camera angles, and not a sign of what the in game camera is going to be like.

Honestly, I never understood the appeal of Sonic to begin with.

I liked the character, but I never had any real fun with the games. Also, the idea of Chaos Emeralds appealed to me for reasons that may or may not be really obvious.

It didn't help that I was Nintendo-obsessed as a kid, but whatever. I saw someone playing Sonic once and I thought "Hey, that looks cool," and then forgot about it and went back to my SNES. Later, I tried out some Game Gear Sonic and then Sonic Adventure 2, but I never finished either game.

How about, instead of forcing some #####ing gimmick into the game (lulz FLUDD, lulz URA WULF, lul beast Sonic?) you just focus on solid gameplay with your character NOT #####ed up to incorporate unnecessary and detracting game elements to make it "different".

I had Far Cry Instincts. I liked the graphics and the gameplay and everything, but the very fact that they re released the same game 5 or 6 times rapes it of all credibility.

I just found the movie of the "leaked" Sonic Unleashed footage--the one in this thread isn't there anymore. I just have to say, wow. Good stuff. This is exactly what I've been waiting to happen. Perhaps side-scrolling is making a comeback?

Exactly. But like Alec said, he never needed an evil counterpart. Shadow is completely contrived and unoriginal. It's great Sonic has lots of characters, but there doesn't need to be multiple fast hedgehogs. Amy is annoying as #####ing hell, but at least she's not forced on us enough to have a lead role or story center around her. Yes, you had to go through her story in SA, but it was easy and quick. Shadow has his own game, for chrisseggs, and it sucks out loud.

Well they could've gone a lot better with it, but I liked Shadow when he first popped in. He just happened to pop in when Sonic games started to suck.

EDIT: Actually, I think Shadow is the LAST new Sonic character I like. There's E-123, but he was... I dunno. Meh. In general, I don't like looking at the cover of a Sonic game and seeing a face I don't recognize. They have TONS of characters as it is.

Shadow didn't have to be contrived, though. Seriously; Memory loss? Check. Dark colouring? Check. Thinks he's the best evar? Check. Was experimented on in a lab? Check. Emo themes? Check. Dark powers that use purple and black effects? Check. Throws the word Chaos around like it's nobody's business? Check. And it goes on.

I mean, he's basically almost a gay hedgey Wolverine getting his emo on. It's like Dark Claw, the Amalgam Universe combination of Wolverine and Batman.

Shadow is all those things because of the age range that his character targets. If they don't appeal to you, you're probably not part of their marketing demographic.

Nothing teaches young children counter-culture quite as well as pop-culture does.

When Shadow hit the scene I was in the demographic, I'm pretty sure. And I didn't think he was cool then. Sonic didn't need a rival, that's what Knuckles was for. And where Knuckles is totally awesome, Shadow is completely trite.

And that was where they lost you. Sonic has always been aimed at a certain age and/or maturity level. As soon as you cross the bridge and see what's being peddled as a shotty biproduct of market research, you've officially escaped their target market.

I'm not defending Shadow as a character, I'm only suggesting that you're maturity level outgrew the archetype.

I'm entirely sure it has, and I get the whole idea. They market this type of character in almost everything that's targeted towards kids. Still, Shadow smells.
