Title: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: ASR on 23 June 2008, 06:35:22 As a massive fan of stand-up comedy, I'm very saddened to hear this. George Carlin was one of my favorites, and today, June 22nd, he passed away due to heart failure.
You were a great inspiration to me, and you made a huge impact on the world of comedy. Definitely one of my favorites. Sucks, man. You came a real #####ing long way. Rest in peace, George. And here's a gift for those who haven't witnessed his comedy. Take some time to watch, if only out of respect. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeSSwKffj9o) EDIT: And now, today, on August 9th, another comedian has died. Say goodbye to Bernie Mac. Dead at the age of 50. Holy shmoley. EDIT2: And now, today, on August 10th, another celebrity has died. Say goodbye this time to Isaac Hayes, famous musician and best-known to us younger folks as the voice of Chef on South Park. He was 65. Ugh. Link. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26125699/) Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: Morgan Guyer on 23 June 2008, 06:48:04 Yeah, I just heard about this too.
He was 71, but could have lived another 15 years. It's a damn shame. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: ASR on 23 June 2008, 06:52:54 He probably died laughing his ass off, laughing that it had finally happened, probably died with his middle finger raised in one final act of defiance.
He at least had that cocky grin on his face, I promise you that. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: Yubi Shines on 23 June 2008, 07:02:53 Flying spaghetti monster bless the man.
Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: Winged Warrior on 23 June 2008, 08:14:58 That is.... Extremely upsetting.
I will miss watching him. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: Johncarllos on 23 June 2008, 12:45:09 Damn, I've seen at least 5 of his videos and read some of his books...
Great comedian. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: Edgecrusher on 23 June 2008, 14:50:34 Well, it's official now. All my favorite comedians are dead.
And I'm willing to bet they're all still laughing at the sad state of things. Though it IS sad that they're no longer around to point those things out. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: Mikero on 24 June 2008, 02:08:15 Yeah I heard that on my mom's alarm radio this morning while I was 3/4 asleep so I thought I'd dreamed it until this afternoon.
Sad stuff, but that's how it goes. At least it wasn't violent or anything. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: Chron on 24 June 2008, 03:02:08 Yeah, heart attacks aren't violent at all.
Well, he was going to go at some point. Still, he was only as old as my granpa. Great man, great man. Left his impact on many lives. Hopefully we all laughed a lot and learned a little about the world from him. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: Mikero on 24 June 2008, 03:26:45 Heart failures and heart attacks are different. So which was it?
Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: Chron on 24 June 2008, 03:36:57 I remember it being a heart attack.
May have heard wrong, though... ... but that doesn't answer the question. *reads news* It was failure. So right, peaceful. what a lame way to die Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: ASR on 24 June 2008, 06:23:31 The magic of Carlin is that not only was he funny, but he was truly insightful.
And yes, heart failure was what I read. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: Jakey on 24 June 2008, 06:34:25 I know you guys won't believe me. But I'll put it on mi abuelo's grave this is the truth.
I went to camp with the great-niece of George Carlin. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: ASR on 24 June 2008, 06:55:02 I believe you, but only because that's believable.
Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: Lunchebox on 25 June 2008, 00:26:12 I know you guys won't believe me. But I'll put it on mi abuelo's grave this is the truth. There's a hidden message there.... you guys won't believe me. IT'S! NOT! BULL#####! Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: Winged Warrior on 25 June 2008, 21:40:40 I remember reading an article early this year from October of last year.
Because my memory is rough sometimes, I don't remember the quote verbatum, But it addressed the thought that George Carlin was "angry at the world." He stated something to the matter of "I'm not angry, Just observant. I don't know why more people aren't. Sure, the things I base my jokes on bother me, but what's worse is the lack of response to those things." He was one of the most influential men in America, as far as I'm concerned. I just hope the feeling that he passed to all of us isn't forgotten any time soon. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: ASR on 27 June 2008, 07:18:40 I've been watching a George Carlin marathon on HBO.
Beautiful stuff. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: Speed Racer on 30 June 2008, 19:09:36 Sucks that he died; his stuff from the 60s and 70s is classic. Nothing beats Al Sleet, the Hippy-Dippy Weatherman "And tonight we'll be getting a Canadian low, which is not to be confused with a Mexican high." "It's 70 degrees over at the airport, which is stupid, 'cause I don't know anybody that lives at the airport." lol. Good stuff.
Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: ASR on 30 June 2008, 22:33:06 It's just that not only is he funny, but he's insightful and interesting to listen to.
Title: Re: George Carlin has died. Post by: saldite on 12 July 2008, 02:57:07 Truly a shame.

Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. Post by: Winged Warrior on 9 August 2008, 21:18:08 famous peeps die in threes...
Here's hoping the next one is Eddie Murphy! *crosses fingers* Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. Post by: ChaosVortex on 10 August 2008, 02:02:11 Bernie Mac, in my opinion, died too young. This is sad news.
I didn't mark him as a favorite comedian though. He was alright. But after hearing this, it made me realized that it'd really suck if Frank Caliendo died. He's one of my favorites I guess... "Here's a man who's honest." Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. Post by: AlexThePenguin on 10 August 2008, 02:24:01 Bernie Mac was a little younger than my mom is.
George Carlin was older, so his death wasn't as unexpected (though still a great loss), but it's always weird to have someone so familiar die. Pneumonia is apparently one of the most peaceful ways to die, because your lungs are essentially flooded, and you don't have much pain. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. Post by: ASR on 10 August 2008, 02:49:03 Frank Caliendo isn't so much funny as he is talented. Great impressions are already funny, and he doesn't throw much more to the table than that... but he DOES do great impressions. Especially John Madden and Bush. Plus, he's got, like, an endless supply, and those Scooby Doo/Shaggy bits he does are awesome.
Anyway, Bernie Mac was a pretty good comedian, but I never really watched him specifically. George Carlin was personal to me because he's one of my favorites, and Bernie Mac is personal because he's just one year older than both my parents. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. Post by: Johncarllos on 10 August 2008, 22:40:29 I was never a fan or Burnie Mac.
No huge loss to me. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: ASR on 10 August 2008, 23:20:41 Another day, another death. Today, Isaac Hayes died. You all probably know him as the voice of Chef on South Park, as I do.
First Chef dies, now Isaac. Yuck. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26125699/ Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: Winged Warrior on 10 August 2008, 23:57:38 ...
Hurray death! Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: NovaMan XP on 11 August 2008, 00:05:58 Another day, another death. Today, Isaac Hayes died. You all probably know him as the voice of Chef on South Park, as I do. That's exactly what I thought... "What? First Chef and now his voice actor?" I just saw this on the news about 20 minutes ago. Too many deaths. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: Abominator on 11 August 2008, 00:41:22 He was a scientologist anyway, so he hasn't died, he's just voluntarily ascended to another plane of existance.
Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: ASR on 11 August 2008, 00:44:06 I would've made a low-blow scientology comment if I didn't like the guy so much.

Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: ASR on 17 August 2008, 06:12:22 Well, the movie did nothing about Elvis, it's the books that cover it. Mostly Harmless, I believe, though unbelievably I can't remember if it was that one or So Long.
Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: Ikeoko on 17 August 2008, 06:18:12 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is also pretty amazing.
Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: Winged Warrior on 17 August 2008, 10:45:29 No, No. I believe the movie did reference it... If only for a moment.
Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: ASR on 17 August 2008, 16:35:22 I promise you the movie didn't reference Elvis at all.
Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: Mikero on 17 August 2008, 21:16:01 If it happened in So Long And Thanks For All The Fish or in Mostly Harmless, then why would it be in the movie?
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: ASR on 17 August 2008, 21:20:27 The movie mixes some things from all over, but they're always very tiny and very subtle, more like homages to the other books. It's very different than the first book, anyway, so it's not like it matters. The movie is its own incarnation, anyway. I just know that it never references Elvis.
I checked, and the Elvis bit happens in Mostly Harmless. He gets pretty much his own chapter and I'm pretty sure they never even say his name. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: Mikero on 17 August 2008, 21:28:15 Does the movie do the story of the whole series, more or less? Or just the first book?
Jess and I were originally racing to read the books but she's tried before and for whatever reason just can't get into them. She said she likes the movie though. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: ASR on 17 August 2008, 21:35:13 The movie is a re-imagining of the first book, if it were an extremely Hollywood-ified movie.
Douglas Adams himself wrote the original draft of the script, and several versions of it I might add, but they hired someone else to revise it once more before they finally made it into a real movie. I personally don't know how much of the movie was Douglas and how much was rewrites, but overall it has a really different flavor. There's obligatory Hollywood-style romantic-comedy romances, and it follows a generic movie formula flow, but it's still Hitchhiker's Guide. Just covers the events of the first book, with an ending that wraps it up right there and doesn't leave anything open for more. Well, it does, but it wouldn't be the same. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: Ikeoko on 17 August 2008, 21:46:02 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? It's an awesome movie about a car that can fly and go on the water and it super funny and GREAT! Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: Mikero on 17 August 2008, 22:56:18 I know what it is, but I don't know how it relates to the conversation.
Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: Ikeoko on 17 August 2008, 23:40:55 Cause I said it was an awesome movie which relates to how I said that Back to the Future is an awesome movie which relates to Elvis being alive which relates to Heath Ledger being alive which is really the main point of this whole thing.

Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: ASR on 4 September 2008, 03:18:39 I started watching it right when it ended.
I deliberately DIDN'T watch the finale because I was convinced that I needed to watch every episode before I would allow myself to watch the finale. Even as a kid I was like that. I eventually broke that rule, though. Even though I bought the whole DVD collection later and watched it all in succession. But yeah, I love Seinfeld. Let's talk about that for a bit. I would certainly get a good laugh if someone imitated Jerry or Kramer. Definitely Kramer. I at least watched enough Seinfeld to know the whole "SERENITY NOW!" deal. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. Post by: ASR on 4 September 2008, 03:45:57 Frank Caliendo did a GREAT sketch where he played the roles of all four major Seinfeld cast members, plus Neuman. It really was a GREAT sketch.
Which sadly let me to believe that the rest of his show would be good. It seems like he pitched TBS his show using nothing but the sketch, which I personally would've been like "That's all we need to see. You can have your show." But nobody could've predicted the rest would've been so bad. He is an ace impressionist, though. The best out there. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes. I'd also sentence Frank Caliendo to two full seasons of RE-ENACTING entire episodes of Seinfeld. And maybe some movies. Actually, that's not a bad idea. Not a parody, just Frank Caliendo re-enacting movie scenes word-for-word, exactly as they're supposed to be... just everybody is Frank Caliendo. I would also air porn in the daytime. Opposite Oprah and Ellen. Title: Re: George Carlin has died. And Now Bernie Mac. And Isaac Hayes.
