Apparently an application will run when you post while signed on to AIM, Cloaking both your SN, and a random user who also posted giving you a chat with "____________salmon"

Here is my most recent encounter, With a few privacy related alterations.

I had Facebook.

Then I got suspended from school.

...But ANYWAY, don't want a LiveJournal, don't plan on having one.

I had Myspace, then shifted over to Facebook. I check my Myspace every once in a blue moon, but I really can't tolerate it.

Facebook is much more... well, much LESS annoying. But still.

If it wasn't such a useful social tool, I wouldn't use it.

I haven't touched any journal style stuff (except blogspot but I only put art up on that, as my own personal sort of subsite) in ages. Even if I did go back to my LJ I'd only use it to write musings and rants/essays/thesises. (Is that the plural of 'thesis'? Surre it is.)

Every once in a while, I post notes on Facebook, but usually for humor's sake.

Rarely, I get the touch for something insightful.

What causes this?  Also, does this only affect people who update using the browser, or does it also apply to people who use a client (such as Semagic)?


EDIT:  Upon further investigation, it would appear that this has been going on for quite awhile!!  So I'm thinking it only applies to people who update in-browser, since I use a client (it takes less effort).  Apparently this is some kind of social experiment...??

I just got salmon'd! It's the fourth time this has happened. The first couple of times I just got rude comments back (understandable), but I think I managed a friendly conversation this time, which is kind of neat. It helped that I knew what the heck was happening and filled the other person in so they didn't think I was crazy. Was too tired and woozy to keep the IM going though.

I still don't fully understand what salmon is, or how it happens.

Do not make a joke about me not knowing what the fish is. Because I know it is. Disgusting.

What happens is a program detects LJs that have recently updated, checks if the account has an AIM in their profile, and then connects two people together in a conversation. Neither see the other person's real screenname, just something like PercolatedSalmon. It always begins with some pre-set message that can be topical or funny or spooky or stupid. It's confusing and unsettling at first, and you don't have to talk to the other person, but it's kinda neat if you just roll with it and talk. I'm not sure if the program blocks you from being able to send your real screenname or LJ username, or a link to themissinghat community.

I now consider logging off AIM before posting on LJ... I like having a related community or mutual friend before chatting it up on AIM. Though LJ is technically a community, It's so traverse I wouldn't want to deal with it.

Here's hoping the salmon also links common interests though.
