A major passion of mine is stand-up comedy.

It's even something I'm interested in pursuing as a career. I've never performed, but I'm trying to build up enough material in order to be able to.

It seems enough Matricians share an interest in stand-up comedy to warrant its own thread.

I don't really have a favorite comedian, because I really just go through phases with who I like. It's especially hard to group them together by saying "Oh, I like Louis C.K. and Demetri Martin," because they really couldn't be more different.

Anyway, I just got done watching "Zach Galifianakis: Live at the Purple Onion", a DVD I bought a while ago but haven't had time to watch. He's got a really interesting style. I love it.

I could talk about this endlessly, but I really don't feel like it.

I watch a lot of stand up.

I don't really follow any of them.
I know maybe a handful of current ones, and most of my "favorites" are usually run of the mill guys like young Bill Cosby, George Carlin, Ellen DeGeneres...

... what most people might think of as too mainstream.
But this is probably a result of me not watching any TV but Food Network and Discovery.

Oh, and there is one comedian I do think particularly highly of.
That would be Gallagher.

Not because he's funny, but more because he smashes open watermelons.

I actually really like Jim Gaffigan, I just don't feel like clicking it now (am watching TV).

I like Black Gallagher.

I don't like stand up.

We talk about comedy and reference comedians here all the time. Especially Mike, Edge, and myself. Don't flatter yourself, bud.

Black Gallagher is the best.

I liked Xero's post because it reminded me of when you ask a really broad and thoughtful question to a crowd of people and this one guy answers immediately and ever so confidently.

I could talk about this endlessly, but I really don't feel like it.

I'm the same way but I still felt like finally making a topic for the general discussion of it.

Oh I see...so I make an obscure Lewis Black reference in my post and a few hours later someone beats me in time to make a comedy thread....damn.

For those unfamiliar with Bill Hicks material, he has a DVD (http://www.amazon.com/Bill-Hicks-Live-Satirist-Stand-Up/dp/B0004Z33FK) for under fifteen dollars with three of his best live performances from his entire career.

Worth the money, ten-fold.

I'll definitely get that, then. I've been known to buy comedy DVD's on nothing more than a whim if only to broaden my horizons, so I'd have no problem getting it on suggestion.

It's just a matter of when.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I saw Russell Peters live in May or April or something. Was great.

I missed seeing Chris Rock (for the same/a lower price and at a way better venue too!) by a DAY. That was annoying.

Also, Dave Attell is hilarious.

He is. His show, Insomniac, was great too. If only for the clip where he talked to the people educating others about Jesus.

Yeah, I used to watch Insomniac waaaaay back when. I loved that show.

Jim Gaffigan is pretty great. Its a bit annoying how he talks about nothing but food in his Beyond the Pale show, despite it being pretty hilarious.

I personally think it's more annoying how often he uses that falsetto voice.

Not that he isn't funny.

I find that to be great.

It makes me jealous that I can't do that.

Oh, believe me, I can do funny voices. A plethora of funny voices and accents. And I can do a sort-of falsetto, but not to the extent that Gaffigan does it.

Good news.

Found a crowd to see Daniel Tosh with tonight.

Fate waited until the morning OF the show before securing me a party. Bitch.

But yeah, glad I don't have to alone; I'm not even sure I would've gone alone, anyway.

So, yeah, I'm hoping to get my Daniel Tosh DVD signed, too. Can't wait for tonight.

Lewis Black and George Carlin.

I actually saw Lewis Black live a few years back. I have both of his books, Me of Little Faith, and Nothing's Sacred. (I got them for my birthday). He's great to listen to, especially during trips.

Carlin... Need I say more? He's George #####in' Carlin. We have one CD of his, and it's awesome.

I have a friend who saw Lewis Black live earlier this year. Apparently there were other comedians there, too.

As he told the story: "I walked towards Carlos Mencia holding a piece of paper and a pen, but instead walked right past him without even glancing at him and got an autograph from Lewis Black. The look on his face was priceless."

Mencia is a ##### heel.

That's why as much as I don't really care for this kid, he's almost a hero of mine for snubbing Mencia.

Just re-watched The Comedians of Comedy: Live at the Troubador again, because Jasper Redd, who opened for Daniel Tosh when I went last night, is on it and I felt bad because if I had known, I would've gotten that DVD signed, too.

When him and Daniel were outside, most people were just lining up in front of Daniel so he was just kind of standing to the side of the crowd talking to a few people at a time. He was really cool, I had a chat with him.

But yeah, I'm pissed that I didn't get my CoC DVD signed because I just now had a great idea: it would be pure awesome if I could get that DVD signed by EVERYONE on the show. It would take forever, but hell, that's one of my favorite comedy shows and that would just be fantastic to have everyone's autograph on the case.

Oh, and if you haven't seen that show, I HIGHLY reccomend it. It's usually pretty cheap, no more than $15. It's well worth the money and showcases a #####load of equally hilarious comedians that most people tend to overlook.

Anyway, for the last few months, I've noticed that I can't watch stand-up comedy as a VIEWER anymore. I watch it with a critical eye, now. I'm starting to think that it's really something I want to do with my life, and now I just pay really close attention to everything and really study the performances.

I don't think it counts, but I saw Kids in the Hall live a couple years ago.

Technically they're not stand-up comics, but everyone is talking about comics they've seen live soooo....

You have no idea how jealous that makes me.

It's close enough, and that's awesome.

Eh, I was near the back, and they were all a little older, a little fatter (Dave Foley), but it was still pretty great.

I LOVE The Kids in the Hall. I must have seen like EVERY episode of their show.

What skits did they do?

I went to see them in like... 2004 or 2005, I think, I don't remember.

A new Heccubus sketch, where they made fun of Dave for being fat.
The one where that kid loves GMILFs...
I think they MIGHT have done a C/Kathy(s) sketch...
There was a Buddy monologue, where he talked about having sex with Saddam Hussein...
The "IT'S CITIZEN KANE" sketch...
I think there COULD have been a Chicken Lady sketch, but there might not have been...

And that's what I can remember off the top of my head.

it was a great show, really funny!

There was an intro video that shows what they were doing before getting the "call" to go do live KiTH shows.

Dave was going to swim in the ocean or something, I forget why, but he ended off with saying "... or the terrorists will have truly won!", with very unimpressed on-lookers, before getting the call (A whistle) and saying "Oh thank Christ!".

Mark was a janitor...

Bruce was on a Blind Date type show.

Scott was practicing to be the Aflek duck...

I forgot what Kevin was doing.

Ugh, I can't believe I remember so little.

They MIGHT still be touring, I'm not sure.

Sounds like fun. I've seen so few people/groups live.

I got home really late last night, but before going to bed, I noticed that Louis C.K.'s new special was on Showtime OnDemand.

So I watched about half of it.

If I have time before I go back to school today, I'm gonna' finish. Because it was great so far.
