The picture above is perhaps one of the most amazing animals I've ever had. A fairly old boxer dog whom I've had for half of my life was put down this morning due to a severe cancer infection on his rear hindpaw. The family took him to numerous vets and they all gave a half-assed hypothesis on what the growth was from. Parents didn't have the money to get the paw, much less the leg amputated, which made the infection spread throughout his entire body. We've taken him to many, and most of them said it was, in fact, cancer. The growth grew to where his paw was as large as an average softball. It grew worse until he started to get gangreen. We couldn't wait any longer and he was put down today; Friday morning. He's been one of the very few living beings that kept me sane on this damned planet. He was unique... Something about him was so fascinating. Everybody could read his mind just by looking at his face. He had traits and a personality like an average human. I loved him to death, but this was all inevitable in the long run...

It's amazing how people like us can be so attached to an animal, whether it be a canine, feline, or even a pet fish. I know I'm not the only one undergoing or has undergone such emptiness, which is why I would like to hear your stories of how you went and undergone a pet's passing.

My dad really liked this Chinese Fighting Fish we had. He was actually depressed when it died.

I myself never had a pet. However, my friend has two pet dogs, both I consider also a friend. The first one is really old, though, and I think I might cry when she goes.

People who don't have dogs or cats really don't understand. They think "it's just a dog, get over it". But these animals really become part of your family. I don't know what to tell you, other than I understand how hard it must be.

My dad said that about my dog.

After my mom divorced him, he was supposed to take care of two border collies. Susie and Sally.

Sally is the only one left. Susie had heart worms and my dad didn't take her to the doctor. We finally learned all about it when she died. I was full of different emotions, but I was mainly ticked at my Dad.

The thing that just DIDN'T HELP at all is when he said those words.

"It's just a dog."

Ouch, you got my condolences as well TLO. I have a dog, and I know how hard its gonna be when she dies.

When our first family dog died, I didn't really care.

When my parents gave away the second family dog because he had bladder problems and we couldn't take care of him, I didn't really care.

I doubt I'll care when either of the two dogs my family has now die.

I've never had a pet, myself.
Which has had the effect OD is talking about. I don't even consider animals to be on the same level of existence as human beings.

Not that that prevents me from caring about animals. I like a few.

I just don't get too broken up over death.

Same.

And I've owned pets.

And yeah, I've connected with all of them, they were and are part of the family, but I don't care THAT much about them.

It's a different story when you raise the animal yourself.

Not just the hard work and troubles, but the loss of something that you sculpted into a pet that behaved the way you wanted.

Unless the animal fails to behave, then I don't really care about it.

I practically raised all my our family's dogs myself, with the exception of my dad being just as involved as I was.

Sure, I loved them and trained them and they loved me back, but it didn't really bother me at all when the first two were gone.

After all, you did all of that raising and care for the animal not to prevent it from dying, but to make it a happy part of your family while it was still alive. That's what counts.

S'how I think of it.

When my first cat died and I paraded around the house with a picture of him while bawling. I later had anxiety attacks because I was sure "I was next".

We had to put my cat down when I was in high school or just after, so I know how that feels man.

Oh, I lived next to an animal hater when I used to live in Illinois.

He'd run over our cats whenever he'd get the chance.

I hated burying my first cat...
I was so depressed I dug a grave big and deep enough for a person.
Didn't even realize it.

I had a cat that died due to stomach problems.

I know just about how you feel...

I had to watch mine die of asthma (#####ING ASTHMA) because no vet's offices were open and I couldn't put it out of misery myself.

This is nice depressing thread.

But the animals were good for what they did when they were alive, the bonds they formed and how they taught us each responsibility.

My uncle had to take out his cat, poor thing suffered in the basement all night.. Pooped every where and was crying its butt off (and yet it still pooped) None of them could take it to a vet, so he put the cat in a burlap sack and clonked it with a shovel.

This topic is just to discuss how you all have recovered from deaths of pets/animals close to you. If you get depressed or anxiety attacks, sorry, but that's your problem.

He's apparently really bummed up about it, more than the first one we got...
