I'm finishing my resume right now, I plan to submit it as soon as I can so I can have a job sometime before or during the summer. Though, this is my first resume and I needed some helpful hints and tips, the lot of you should be able to spice up my already impressive* resume.

Criticism, help and tips are 'preciated. Thanks.

"utilize" AAAAAAAAAAARGH
It's OK to use it in a resume but going through tech writing courses make you hate this word.

As for the resume, it looks good. It's clean, one page... doesn't seem to have any grievous errors.

"To obtain a part time career in an environment to which I can utilize and improve my skills."
This sentence is a little wordy; you might consider revising it.

The bit under "Responsibilities include:" should be center aligned, or at least tabbed closer to the heading.

You might also want to add a few technical courses to the list (word processor, etc.). That always impresses people.

I've seen people go over resumes with a red pen and mark through spelling errors and grammar mistakes, so it can make quite a difference.

Right'O, my brother gave me his resume so I could just convert into my own. I never noticed the word "career", which'll be a no no. Well, maybe.

A Resume is all well and good, but it's what you do with it.



Turn in the resume with an application. look nice and if you can, fill out the application in-store.

About three days later, "check up" on the hiring process. this brings your name to the top of the list and lets you know how close they are to starting the interviewing process...  Repeat when needed.

In the interview, prepare yourself to be hired, and be confident. Also note the matter that they would be hiring you to make money themselves. At the end of the interview, go back to the service desk/receptionist and give a ready made thank you note. This note need not be fancy, nor store baught, but professional and clean. Something of the nature of "[Mr./Mrs. Manager name] I wanted to thank you again for the oppertunity of an interview. I hope you the best in the hiring process and I look forward to joining your team.

Finally start your job without #####ing up, you damn air-head.

Filling out an application, insisting on meeting the manager/owner and making sure they know who you are is my method. Worked for me. I'm leaving out the other 6 places I didn't get a response from, but hey!

The cool thing is, the bagel shop where I work is literally less than a two minute drive from my house. It's very convenient.

The "put your name at the top of the list" thing really pisses me off, too.
Use a database, damn it. No lists. Lists are stupid. Random access data structures only.

The thank you notes are a big hit. Virtually no one does it, and it's like magic, It only appears that you are going the extra mile...

Also, I misplaced my word when I said list. When dealing with paper applications, there are oftentimes stacks, oldest on bottom. When you jump in, they usually look for it to note on it that you have checked up on it. At that time, it goes back on the top of the stack. Keeping you right there, staring at the manager saying "you want to hire me...."

Apply everywhere. Seriously. Everywhere. Everyone is looking for cushy jobs, you should expand your search area beyond just those highly-sought-after jobs and maybe, just maybe, someone will be willing to have you on.

Thanks for the tips fellas, if I use the written application I'll definitely try and bump it up every few days, maybe even with my own resume. I'll also apply everywhere, I already know that much, and there are a few grocery stores around my place anyway.

That's the thing though. Sometimes, Like with my job, all you need is a good reference from a friend in that workplace.

Either way, It doesn't hurt to have Many, Many, MANY applications. One of the biggest mistakes I have seen is people not wanting to "bother" the manager. Hell, If you hear nothing from the job you want after two weeks, fill out another application. Then you are in that stack TWICE! IT SHOWS COMMITMENT, EXCITEMENT, RELIABILITY!

Plus, #####, If you think of it as if you are not going to be hired anyway, Then bugging the manager won't do you any harm.

Another trick that "works," is one that I'm often told to do, but never do. Show up bright and early to the place you're applying for and say you're ready to work. Hell, do it every day you can. Offer a 'free day' so you can volunteer and they can see if you are right for the company. This apparently shows that dedication and stuff I listed earlier while proving to the hiring manager that you are more reliable to show up, unpaid, without a job... than many on the payroll.

Mature and professional employers are a different story, which you can most likely expect. The former will probably lose his job or quit.

Volunteering to buff up your resumé helps, especially in a specific field.

I've got over 400 hours of unpaid work.

It also makes it look like you're involved in your community (read: not lazy, self-starting, not in it for the money).

Yeah in Canada you have to do a certain amount of community service hours to graduate high school certainly Wind's probably got that down. By "down" I mean "done". Because I have no idea if he has it down on his rezooma zoom zoom in the boom boom.

But in total, it was 80, counting all 4 years.

And then I think there was 5 or 10 I needed in 8th grade.

Yeah, also had to do them to take/exempt exams too.

I went to the plaza where the grocery store that I was going to apply to was. And then I saw something EVEN BETTER. Shoppers Drug Mart. THE MOST SILENT JOB IN THE 'VERSE!

I got an application and I'm writing it up now, they're not looking for help but the cashier said the boss never throws apps away. I'll try for this job (I REEEEEALLY want it) and have the grocery store as my back up.

Go wider.

When they tell you that they're not looking for help that means they typically take around a few weeks to a month to look at your application and even then there might be a pile and you might not look the most intriguing from the bunch.

Personally, I printed out 10-20 resumes and literally went door to door asking if anybody was hiring. If they weren't I asked if I could just leave my resume with them and they took it most of the times. Then again this was like two weeks ago and only Old Navy's called me back :|.

But yeah, some suggestions would be:

EB Games and Gamestop etc, Comic and hobby stores, grocery stores if you can find some good ones, and never think you're above fast food.

And of course below that pile is the hell known as retail.

Today I'm gonna apply for Publix, Winn-Dixie (they're grocers), Gamestop, and Play'n'Trade. I'll eventually need to write a resume and such. Any help would be appreciated. I don't know how I'm gonna attempt this.

Well, I used WIND's as a base, but I worked off of my mother's resume as an example. Any tips, hints, suggestions, or money would be greatly appreciated.
