It was really good, but it was really depressing.

I started examining my own life as I was watching the movie, and in all honesty...if someone had handed me a gun while I was watching it, I would've blown my brains out.

What? Depressing? Are you kidding me? It was one of the happiest movies I've seen in a long while. Hell, it would almost be optimistic if it wasn't so clearly realistic. It made me very happy and you know from the very beginning how it ends anyway. I think it's because I'm such a fervent realist that when someone nails the idea of love on the head so perfectly, it reaffirms my faith that it's all worthwhile in the first place.

In the end, both characters are better off for the entire experience. That can hardly be considered depressing. This isn't Requiem for a Dream.

Sure, it starts off happy and ends happy, but there's plenty in between that is downright depressing.

Well of course the middle is depressing! That's because the end hasn't happened, and the end justified the means! I was felt so happy after watching, maybe because I got outta my own burning #####-house, and it felt good to relate to the movie and helped get a better realistic grasp on things.

Just got back from Avatar.

While the story is bland and predictable (hell, you could map it all out in your head right after you see the trailer - I outlined it for my friends on the drive to theater and I was pretty much dead on), that is most definitely NOT why anyone should go see this movie. And they SHOULD go see it, for the beauty and technological marvels alone. And definitely see it in 3D, though I doubt anyone would choose not it if they had the choice.

It's really gorgeous and breathtaking. The 3D is downright impressive without ever being gimmicky, which only adds to the fire. The fact that not once does anything "pop out" at you like this is Spy Kids 3D or a Disney attraction makes you focus on the movie, which looks will constantly impress you with each new shot. The stuff they do with glass and windows will have you in awe.

Also, the art direction in general. I thought it looked ridiculous and silly in the trailer. Blue elves? Floating islands? Ugh. That trailer had thrown me off right up until the moment I actually started watching. I only went because I was interested in all this "changing the landscape of movies forever" talk, and I only went at a midnight showing because I went with a group of friends. So yeah, the art direction: #####ing fantastic. This movie IS beautiful. I haven't been this impressed with awe-inspiring special effects and landscapes since the Planet Factory Floor scene in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I'm still really more impressed by the technological aspects - the movie itself wasn't all that great. Still fun, and the action sequences are top-notch. It's certainly a great blockbuster, but blockbusters have never been my type. Still, if this is the future of the Hollywood blockbuster, sign me up.

Disappointing that Cameron failed to nail the story part of the movie, but it's good to see him back at the forefront of the technological aspect. I'll have to go see that if I can find a 3-D theatre around here

It's not that the story is BAD, it's just that it's... it's predictable, nothing new, etc.

It's still engaging, I guess. But I mean, the mineral that humans want from the Navi's planet is called, AND I KID YOU NOT: "Unobtanium."

Ferngully + Halo + Dances With Wolves + any generic movie where two factions are at war and one human spends time with the other faction and decides that he sympathizes with them and thus "goes native" to fight his own people and then stuff explodes = Avatar

Except, you know, with some of the most breathtaking visuals and impressive 3D technology ever.

Without those visuals and 3D, the movie would be balls and entirely groan-worthy, though.

Just to give you an idea: the mineral that the humans want from the blue elve's planet is called, AND I KID YOU NOT: "Unobtanium."

I'm confused about the Avatar movie.

One friend is obsessive about it, claiming it's the "most beautiful thing [she's] ever seen."

Another friend wonders aloud if he just watched Fern Gully in 3D.

Yet another friend thinks it's stupid and doesn't know what the big hype is about.

What is the premise of this movie, and why is it such a big fuss?

What is the premise of this movie

Dances with Smurfs.

and why is it such a big fuss?

It's the supposed epic James Cameron has been working since Titanic.

I want to see it because I just want to know, y'know? But I'm at least gonna wait until I'm sure all the furries have seen it aren't going to have the theatre packed in their abhorrent costumes with the dickholes in 'em.

After seeing it in 3D though, every time I look at something from the movie in 2D it just doesn't do it justice.

I recommend seeing the movie.

I've heard it's exactly the story of Fern Gully or Dances With Wolves, which makes it much less interesting to me.

I'm watching the movie Sicko for the first time and wow I'm really glad I don't have to pay for health care like you doofs. Your health care system is appalling.

I mean, I already knew this because I've researched the topic before, but sheesh.

Yeah, I saw Sicko and it was oddly convincing even though I know he just didn't focus on the opposition even a tiny bit so it just sounds like our health care doesn't have ANY merits, when there are just as many horror stories from socialized health care and just as many victory stories from what we've got going on. My favorite part of the movie is when he anonymously (well, not after the movie) donated all that money to the guy who ran the Michael Moore Hate site.

Oh, Up In The Air was good. Not Thank You For Smoking good, but much better than Juno.

I'm not sure what these horror stories of socialized health care are... I do know that there's a lot of fake horror stories about it spread by the big business bastards that run your health care system, though, but I'm sure you're talking about real stuff. I haven't watched any other Michael Moore movies so I don't know how fair he is usually but Sicko definitely has me rethinking some plans (in the future-ture-ture-ture- I want to live in a few different cities for a while).

I really don't know much at all on the subject, so maybe I'm wrong, but Moore is notorious for only showing the pros of the argument he's making and making the other option seem like absolute death.

I did enjoy Sicko and he definitely made a bunch of legitimate points, but I won't let myself be persuaded by it in any way until I read up on all counts of it in a completely fair setting. Which is not something I plan on doing until I actually care more about it, which might not be for a while.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs gets two thumbs WAAAAY up!

On the count that it's actually funny. It's a non-Pixar animated CGI film that's NOT starring animals and has jokes that expand further than "that bear did something a bear wouldn't normally do!" or "that guy made a silly noise and now the other guy's angry at him for being annoying!"

So... basically, check it out if you're interested. Because it was very good.

In all seriousness I am really tired of talking animal movies. Also those kinds of jokes ASR mentioned are more typical of Dreamworks..

I said NON-Pixar. Meaning since this isn't Pixar, it's surprising that it's not just another one starring animals. Which is pretty much all Dreamworks flicks save for Shrek, so yes. "Cloudy" is Sony, not Dreamworks or Pixar or that recent string of CGI Disney movies that aren't Pixar... and I can't think of any others.

But yes, the talking animal thing is getting old. I'm not saying you can't still make a good movie out of talking animals, it's just that I have no desire to see another one and I'll likely just lump it in with all the other similar crap since barely anybody seems to be able to think of anything more original than that.
