Just got back from Avatar.
While the story is bland and predictable (hell, you could map it all out in your head right after you see the trailer - I outlined it for my friends on the drive to theater and I was pretty much dead on), that is most definitely NOT why anyone should go see this movie. And they SHOULD go see it, for the beauty and technological marvels alone. And definitely see it in 3D, though I doubt anyone would choose not it if they had the choice.
It's really gorgeous and breathtaking. The 3D is downright impressive without ever being gimmicky, which only adds to the fire. The fact that not once does anything "pop out" at you like this is Spy Kids 3D or a Disney attraction makes you focus on the movie, which looks will constantly impress you with each new shot. The stuff they do with glass and windows will have you in awe.
Also, the art direction in general. I thought it looked ridiculous and silly in the trailer. Blue elves? Floating islands? Ugh. That trailer had thrown me off right up until the moment I actually started watching. I only went because I was interested in all this "changing the landscape of movies forever" talk, and I only went at a midnight showing because I went with a group of friends. So yeah, the art direction: #####ing fantastic. This movie IS beautiful. I haven't been this impressed with awe-inspiring special effects and landscapes since the Planet Factory Floor scene in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I'm still really more impressed by the technological aspects - the movie itself wasn't all that great. Still fun, and the action sequences are top-notch. It's certainly a great blockbuster, but blockbusters have never been my type. Still, if this is the future of the Hollywood blockbuster, sign me up.
