I'm upset as well, even though its basic human instinct to increase our knowledge, we shouldn't tamper with power we don't know how to fully control. I mean, black wholes should only be for their original use, intergalactic garbage dumps; they take in like a trillion tons of mass and when they're finished, it compresses it all into a basketball sized ball of mega-dense mass.. the dumping fee's are horendous though..

Anyway, anyone who watched the first episodes of Andromeda knows that the opposite of a black hole is a "white hole", which is essentially an explosion of mass that continues ever outward (a Big Bang).

That was only if a true black hole opened though. What could actually feasibly occur is a micro black hole opens and rotates to the center of the Earth where it will spend the next 2,000 years or so eating stuff. So we wouldn't have to deal with it. x.x Sucks for those people though. Stephen Hawking said that the hole will dissipate though before having the chance to do anything. I guess lets hope for the best.

Granted I'm not an astrophysicist or any kind of physicist, but this it what I think.

That sounds completely bullshark.

"Micro black hole". They don't even know for sure what black holes are MADE of. They only got substantial proof of gravitons like last year. The whole idea of making a black hole, small or not, is completely irresponsible even if you UNDERSTAND what you're doing. It's like that sun thing in Spider-Man 2.

It's just ridiculous and wild. Too many variables could end in the loss of so many lives. There are many types of black holes. I doubt we'd have any way of stopping the hole if it grows. None. So I don't see how anyone can assume they'll be able to make it small or large. It takes only a little action for a devastatingly huge reaction. Actually, I'm not even sure black holes have real "sizes". I've heard they could be just a single point but they all will act the same so I think 'size doesn't matter'. But it helps.

And I don't even know how anyone expects to SEE this thing. Visible light can't escape a black hole, and the only reason we can see anything is because light bounces off it. So unless they will literally see "nothing" (not even black really), it's beyond me. They would probably have to and will pump all kinds of gasses around it that could be tracked by the radiation they'll give off when they enter the gravity well but I don't even know if the proper gases exist on this planet. I don't think we've been around long enough to be prepared for this kind of thing.

This is like trying to punch out God.

Of course, like I said, this is all beyond me because I'm not them and I'm probably 1000 times wrong. And if they're going to use a "fireball" then I guess none of what I said matters.

So, like, a tiny one just starting out probably wouldn't make a noticeable difference for quite a few years. You probably wouldn't even realize its there until it started really sucking in air.

I also figured it wouldn't suck in light until it reached a certain level of mass. I mean, I'm pretty sure Earth doesn't suck in light, so I imagine the black hole would have to hold a hell of a lot of mass for the gravity to... you know, have an effect on that.

That being said, I have no idea why a tiny black hole would come into existence anyway. Not to pretend that I really know anything about the subject, but I was a supporter of the theory that when your gravitational pull becomes stronger than your own... structural integrity, you collapse and become a black hole, so you'd have to be pretty heavy and weak, like a dying star. Maybe it's just a matter of reaching a certain density, so I guess I can look at it that way if I'm right.

There's also the theory that a black hole is really a hole that leads somewhere else. For example, if you poke yourself with a needle, blood starts coming out. We are, perhaps, INSIDE something on a higher spatial level, and if that skin holding us together breaks, we could... leak out. I don't know if I believe that one, but hey, it's an idea. An idea that I guess doesn't have much to do with the conversation anyway, but I thought I'd throw it in there.

Black holes don't eat matter, so I doubt they grow like that at all. There is a theory that they get bigger by absorbing 'smaller' nearby black holes and stars. Kind of like water droplets, I guess.

But they aren't katamari, no.

Black holes do not grow in size, even when two black holes absorb each other.

The only difference made by the objects absorbed by a black hole to the hole itself is the amount of Hawking radiation given off at the event horizon.

OK that's the impression I was under, but I wasn't sure if event horizons got bigger or not so I omit putting anything like that in.

I think if they intend to make a true blackhole, no matter what "size", it will surely destroy much-if not all-of our planet at LEAST. But probably our whole solar system. This is pretty much worse than any plan an evil genius in a comic book has had recently.

Well, a man-made micro black hole (mathematically) isn't as scary as you'd think. Due to Hawking radiation, the singularity would "evaporate" almost instantly at the size they'd be making.

Of course, according to the Standard Model, a LHC isn't capable of generating the amount of energy necessary to create a black hole of any size.

Yea they said that even at full power (which will be achieced in about a year they said) the worst possible situation that could occur would be the beams going off and blowing up part of the collider. But when it goes off no one is in the tunnel (for obvious reasons) and so no one would have a chance of being hurt. But of course all of this is in theory. While it may the theories of brilliant people, I guess there still is a chance stuff could go wrong. We are after all messing with stuff we have little to no experience with.

I hope someone forgets a watch in the tunnel and goes in without anyone knowing and gets stuck in there and gets vaporized into subatomic particles and then rebuilds them self from scratch over like a month and then becomes Dr. Manhattan but I hope it's a fem doctor this time so I can look a blue boobs in every panel when I read about her. I've never seen true blue boobs before and this is the most realistic chance of ever seeing them. Yes it is.
