Did anyone pick up Cage the Elephant's new album? I'm not terribly impressed with this one compared to their debut.

I listened to some parts of it.
It's not really anything compared to their first album. It has no character.

I saw the video for Shake Me Down. I didn't really like or dislike the song, it was a little generic, but I thought the video was itself pretty good.

There's no bite to it. It's like meeting up with you protester friend who years ago was yelling "LET'S LYNCH THE LANDLORD!" and is now smoking a ton of grass every day "Can't we all...um, just get along? Peace and love, man!"

It wasn't so much angsty, but it was an album appropriate for a barfight or speeding down the highway 40 miles over the speed limit. In other words - doing things that you probably shouldn't be doing.

About six months ago I went out and tracked down some early Genesis albums, bought them more or less blind (I knew something of what they might be like based on the other bands they were compared to, but I hadn't heard any early 70s Genesis ever) and was pleasantly surprised. They've since become one of my favourite bands, much to the displeasure of my coworkers *wickedest smile ever goes here*

Then just today I found this. It's a piano/vocal arrangement of the entire Lamb Lies Down on Broadway double album, and it is FANTASTIC. And the album's story is absolutely absurd.

Finally got around to listening to "Do Ya Thing" by Gorillaz, Andre 3000, and Eddie Murphy.
Thought the song was pretty good.
Andre #####ing killed it.

Beyond that, I've been listening to the tracks from She's next album "Journeys."
"Journey 9" is probably my favorite track released thus far.
"Journey 7" is second best.

I'm really starting to hate pop radio right now. This is any hour during the day near me:

-20 minutes of commercials
-2 Katy Perry songs (1 of them being "Part of Me")
-1 song featuring Nicki Minaj or a Nicki Minaj song
-1 song by Adele (this is okay, because she actually has talent)
-Fun "We Are Young" (because the anthem of hipsters living off their parents' money isn't played on TV enough)
-1 "dance" song (usually featuring Pitbull)
-Kelly Clarkson "Stronger" (may be played twice in an hour)
-Token "alternative/indie" song (Coldplay, Gotye, Foster the People - but done in phases...almost as if there's an "alternative/indie" band of the month for pop radio)
-1 Bruno Mars song
-1 "rap" song

I try not to generalize to that extent (what the ##### do words like 'modern' and 'contemporary' really mean anyway? In orchestral terms, 'contemporary' means anything from the last CENTURY). I do have little love for synth-pop or the notion of 'indie music' (again, too general, encompassing everything from arena rock and other '80s throwbacks to gentle folkish ballads, Sturgeon's Law applying equally to all of it), but my city's live music scene is actually doing pretty well from what I can hear.

As for my music, I suppose my latest love is Magma (not a new band by most definitions of the term, but NEW TO ME DAMMIT). The most truly operatic of rock opera, and Christian Vander is basically the greatest rock drummer ever.

I'm not arguing your point AT ALL, Speed, but Nicki Minaj is an incredible rapper. I'm not even a fan or anything really, I'm just saying she has a lot of skill/talent. That's evident whether rap is your thing or not, but I guess it's also just opinion.

But I generally am agreeing with what you're saying.

And I'm with Fatso (I'm still uncomfortable with that name) on the way we use certain labels. I can't stand the "indie" label anymore since it's as vague as fibromyalgia and about as painful. "Modern" makes no real sense, and "contemporary" is a different for every single person.

80's synth is G.

If Nicki Minaj is truly incredibly (which I've heard quite a few times, but have actually yet to see), then she needs to stop selling herself as a brand and actually focus on her music. I've heard that her mixtapes from back in the day were killer. But the drivel I hear coming out of her mouth on the radio just reminds me of immature twats in movie theaters who spend the whole time talking on cell phones, and then act like you're somehow in the wrong when you call them out for it.

Also, I think Bruno Mars is terrible, but I don't think it's his fault. I just got sick of so many girls on Facebook gushing over his music "This is how a man should really act!" ##### you, you also think that Edward Cullen would make a terrific boyfriend.

Yesterday was Record Store Day, and while I didn't pick up any of the RSD exclusives (there's no way I'm paying $8 for a single on vinyl), I still bought quite a few albums.

Anti-Flag "The General Strike"
John Legend & The Roots "Wake Up!"
Mos Def "Black on Both Sides"
Nirvana "Nirvana"
Pennywise "Live @ the Key Club"
Pennywise "From the Ashes"
Pennywise "The Fuse"
The Raveonettes "Into the Night"

Right.

There are very few acts, even to this day, that are as brain hammering and mind altering as seeing Fleetwood Mac live, which I did last night.

Stevie Nicks remains head-to-tow a rock goddess at 64 years old, attitude and all.

Lindsey Buckingham (63) shredded out a, like, 10 minute guitar solo. People were so transfixed it seemed like none took a breath the entire time. Faster and harder than most punk acts I've seen. In fact, it was faster and harder than most electronic acts I've seen. I don't even GET what happened.

But then, Mick Fleetwood (65), in an almost "we've all still got it" move crashed a drum solo for even longer, and even crazier, while bantering with the crowd.

And John McVie (67), the "Mac" part, has this way of saying nothing but being undeniable. I'm not sure if he's got stage fright (even this far in) or something, but he's just chilly on the bass guitar minding his own. But you can just tell that no one else can do what he's doing right.

It's not like I'm even a super fan, either. I don't really hide that I'm an old-school hip hop head, though I've got tastes from all around the map. I just sort of got into them right as we found out they were coming to town. With 2 encore acts this would have been impressive enough if they were in their 20's, the talent level is out of sight, but 35 years into the game they put on an absolutely incredible show.

And I've seen some #####in' shows, mate.

"Damn, that sounds fantastic!" he said belatedly.

Simon Collins (son of Phil) recently put together a really spaced-out rock band called Sound of Contact (you'll see what I mean) and released an album just a couple weeks ago called "Dimensionaut". I've been listening to it basically on repeat for the last couple of days. It's got a decent mix of styles, all down the rock spectrum from full-blown psychedelic jams (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7t1U3rFjQu8) to a somewhat reggae-flavoured collaboration with some lady I've never heard of before (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaIE1aLbQO0), to a couple of more straight-laced poppy tunes (my favourite of which: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QldJgDAjoo0), but everything has this wonderful, floaty, SPACEY feel to it - thanks in no small part to the brilliant sound design and arrangements. Well worth checking out, and if you like it, well worth buying.

Anything with real music and not "ambient" garbage that you see in a lot of current stuff.  I'm partial to 16 bit stuff though.  Castlevania and Mega Man in particular have about the best music ever outside of RPGs.

Got to see VNV Nation live in October 2016. That was a killer show. If you're a fan of electronic/industrial music, you will enjoy their music.

New groups added to the roster:

- Kraftwerk (Man Machine, Electric Cafe, Trans-Europe Express, Computer World, Autobahn, Tour de France LPs)
- Tycho (Dive, Epoch)
- Boards of Canada
- Com Truise
- Negative Format

And some currently unable to recall off the top of my head.
