I like the concept of Dune more than the actual stuff, since the books apparently get convoluted after the first few and the movie is, I've heard, crappily made quality-wise (or something).

You heard it here first, folks! Mike likes to nibble bloody legs!

The first three books are pure gold, though I'll admit that the series goes bat##### crazy after that.

Patrick Stewart was the only good part of the first Dune movie, but I haven't seen the newer Children of Dune one so I can't pass judgment on it.

I have the first book, just Dune, lying around in one of my closets back home. I could never get into it. Same thing with Ender's Game, though I probably don't even have that book anymore.

Eclipses DO take quite a while...

Not to mention it was a total eclipse for the whole planet, where a normal eclipse is only complete for a small area and everyone else views it as partial.

Also, two of these eclipses within a year of each other is silly.

Lunar eclipses are capable of lasting as long as the one on Heroes.

In theory, solar eclipses cap out at seven minutes and thirty one seconds.

I'm also curious where Nathan and Peter where supposed to be, since the eclipse was visible from there as well. I assume Haiti, given they were after the brother of "The Haitian". Does that mean we are to understand that a full solar eclipse had a visible range that spanned the continental United States and Haiti?

Heroes = Astronomical fail.

I'd also like to point out that Nathan flew way before the eclipse in season one.

Also,
why did Noah wait for Sylar and What's-her-name to finish having sex before he took the shot?... actually... nevermind. I don't want to know the answer to that.
Annular is a completely normal word, and it's used in the term "total annular eclipse" all the time when referring to solar eclipses. Annular means it has the form of a ring.

This is where I could be a big dick and say I learned that in the first grade, but I have a feeling I the ONLY reason that is, is because there's a similar word (I can't place it though) in french and I was an immersion kid.

Anyway yes they were in Haiti, and it really bothered me too but I shrugged it off because I don't rightly know how much the distance between Haiti and New York is and/or how it would effect it. I know Haiti is in the Caribbean (duh), but I haven't been there since I was turning five (left on my birthday), and that was to Barbados, so I was too young to know any of that.

Like, how far does it appear as a total annular eclipse before it appears as a partial eclipse, and then how far from that area before it doesn't appear as an eclipse at all, or it's not visible at all?

I'm not sure of the exact dimensions, but the area that would be able to see it as a full eclipse could be no larger than the state of New York.  I think.

The area that can see it as a partial eclipse is pretty darn big though.

Mike, I know. I just thought it was pretty stupid and redundant to refer to a solar eclipse as "total annular".

But no, it didn't occur to me when I said that that the moon doesn't always completely cover the sun.

Enough of this stupid argument.

I'm here to plug Entourage again.

We just finished a two-day marathon of the entire series.

I mean, full on 65 episode, 32.5 hour marathon.

It was my first time watching the fifth season, and by Jeeves was it absolutely fantastic. This show is STILL on fire.

Ari Gold is still one of the best characters on TV.

Even if they could legitimately call it a 'total annular eclipse' - which seems redundant, because an annular eclipse is one in which the moon comes directly in front of the sun but never achieves totality because the moon is too far away from Earth to obscure it completely, and they'd be more likely to call a partial eclipse just that instead of distinguishing by type of totality - I saw that eclipse. It was clearly total total, corona and all.

One episode of Dexter left for this season.

That shows writers give me faith that not all television shows are a lost cause.

I haven't been this anxious for a season finale since the final episode of Carnivàle.

What? I liked the episode but the dialogue was spectacularly lame. Everything Sylar said was cheesy, or it's just been done to death in other stuff. I can't remember now but other characters had bad dial too, where as the plot of the episode, I thought, was really good if not totally surprising.

Finally! New season of Flight of the Conchords in January! Definitely among the genuinely funniest shows ever made.

So I've been rewatching the first season to prepare.

And I suddenly remembered where I'd seen Jemaine from BEFORE I got into Flight of the Conchords.

Those old Outback commercials.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nEp_Y7W4IQ&feature=related

Youtube verified this for me.

It's funnier because so much of Flight of the Conchords is spent talking about how much Kiwis hate Aussies.

But yeah, those commercials were hilarious.

Oh, and if you've never seen the show, this short promo for the first season is still hilarious:

So I had some interesting fun for the last few days in terms of watching The Office in my free time.

I watched the first season of the US Office, and then decided I wanted to watch the first series of the UK Office. From there I switched back to Season 2 of the US Office, and then switched back to Series 2 of the UK Office. Then went to Season 3 of the US Office and ended on the UK Office Christmas Special.

Yeah.

So.

Even though I'm biased and will always like the UK original better, I decided that the US version is actually a lot funnier. This was my 3rd time through the UK series and my second time through the US series, though I still haven't seen the 4th season and what's been aired of the 5th season.

Basically, I just find myself genuinely laughing a lot more during the American version. The characters Toby and Ryan and definitely underrated gems and are perfect characters for the US version. Dwight will always be inferior to Gareth, so I hate how everyone says Dwight is their favorite character. Ugh. But yeah.

Basically, this is just me coming to terms with my feelings for The Office on both versions.

And just me babbling.

Ignore.

Anyone know if Psych is any good? That's another show I've thought looked good.

Chuck tonight was entertaining. As far as Christmas episodes of TV shows go, I either love or hate them. This was a "love it" one. Also, "Chuck VS Santa Clause" is a great name for an episode. "Chuck VS Christmas" woulda' been better.

Oh, and I watched Heroes tonight. Because I was helping my dad write Happy Holiday cards to literally everyone he had a business card of, which was over 100 people. All handwritten. Ugh.

But yeah, I wasn't really paying attention but I also kind of was, and I wasn't really lost, either, despite having missed 4 or 5 episodes.

I'm glad I was paying attention for the Pikachu bit. That was funny.

I just watched it. It was a bit different but overall still great. The songs were rather disappointing but I forgive them because the Angels Doin' It song at the end was so awesome. So awesome.

Just watched that new show on HBO called Summer Heights High. I had no idea it was a British show before I started watching. I was just curious as to what it was so I checked out the first episode onDemand.

It's like a mockumentary of a high school that follows three primary characters, all played by the same guy. There's Jonah, a school bully, who's a big problem child. There's Ja'mie, a girl from a private all-girls school who's doing this swap program with another student and acts like she's better than everyone else at the public school. And Mr. G, a very flamboyant drama teacher who's actually pretty funny.

I really can't tell if I liked it or not. It was good, sure, but for some reason I wasn't that pulled by it.

Turns out that Summer Heights High is actually Australian. Huh.

And yeah, Abe, show us.

Oh, and Mike: I'm assuming you have the American Region 1 DVDs of Spaced. If you do, then trust me that all the commentaries are great. So many great people getting together to talk about the show, like Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Patton Oswalt, Matt Stone, etc.
There's two sets of commentaries, too: the original set from when it was first released on DVD in Region 2, and the new set for when it was released here in Region 1 with all the celebrities. Both are good.

I got triple the viewing time from the DVD set by watching every episode three times right off the bat, it was great. Not to mention that I never mind watching any of the episodes again.

Actually, you have to do that for any character in any show. A lot. Sometimes it's annoying to do, and it's all pre-production stuff.

It's just better with comedies because they get to be funny. Much like commentaries.
