Good jokes, but I agree with CV here. Quite stiff and you seem to have a little trouble getting things out in rapid succession, but it's probably just new to you.

I keep reading "pretty good for a beginner" and ##### like that. I'm not one to exaggerate compliments but I'd say this is pretty good for intermediate level.

I'm not so much talking about the jokes themselves, they're alright, but about stage presence and stuff. Not that the jokes aren't good, it's just that the if the jokes are funny they'll go out there and be funny and that's not so much the point.

The way you're talking and stuff is good, I guess what you need to really get everyone to pay attention. I don't know if it's just the video but it sounds like people were just doing their own thing. I don't know. The confidence is there in your voice but not so much in how you're saying what you're saying.

I've heard almost that exact Wal-mart awkward stuff to buy joke before though.
And I think you should find a funny way of explaining the difference between Pokemon and Digimon "for those who don't know what [you're] talking about". I have like... a "rough sketch", if you will, of what I mean in my head but it's your stuff, do what you want.

The difference might be irrelevant, as long as it's clear these are two different nerdy things.
That should suffice for the purpose of the joke, I think.

Maybe his problem is that he comes up a little short on confidence.

We get the joke because we already knew, in some capacity, the difference. Like the about Transformers and Gobots is completely lost on someone who has no idea what one or either of those are.

I still don't think it matters. As long as the obscure references are different, the joke works.

But maybe a more broad thing would work (space/old west)

I've heard basically the same joke told with Transformers vs. Gobots, that's all. It worked better with the person explaining how awful Gobots were.

It's an unrelated vector to the core of the joke, but yeah, I could see how that would add some funny in there.

The original joke idea I had is that the kid just says he likes trains, and they build him a train room with a working train bed and a train set on the cieling, and he's like "Whoah, hey, I just said I LIKE trains, not 'Make my whole room into a train paradise.'"

I was planning on saying that, but for whatever reason, I went with the Pokemon/Digimon one again. And I'm still pretty convinced that you don't really need to explain that, because if anything it's obvious that they're both very similar children fads. And it wasn't meant to be nerdy, more to be kiddy.

I just don't think Pokemon and Digimon are that obscure that I need to explain, but I definitely see what you're saying.

And yeah, Mike, a lot of people there aren't paying attention. It's the venue. This was actually our best crowd, as in the crowd that payed the most attention. All my other videos, you can hardly hear me or when anyone laughs (even though they were) because there's constant talking and noise in the background. This time was the only time they really took us seriously on stage, and you can actually tell when they're laughing, so I decided to put it online.

It's also the only time we didn't have the camera just sitting on a stable surface, so you get Cloverfield-cam, haha.

So you've really heard that Wal-Mart joke before? Like, how exactly? Are you sure it wasn't me who said it before maybe on MMM or something? I've had it lying around for a while and it's always been one I'm proud of. Sucks if there's already a similar one out there.

I'm really trying to work up my own stage persona. Because I've found that just me going up there telling jokes doesn't work. I feel like I could really play off self-deprecation well, but that's not the direction I want to take. I want to go for an over-ego sarcastic laid-back persona. Because that's more of who I am in real life, and I feel like that's already funny in itself. Also, self-deprecating is overdone. And there's already a guy in our group who does it so well.

So, yeah. Right now I've got some decent material, and enough that I can move stuff around and use different stuff every night. I think of new stuff at a steady pace, and it's all at least decent, so I don't have to worry about that right now.

I'm really just trying to focus on stage presence at the moment. Which includes not taking up my notes anymore, and being a little more loose on stage maybe.

Like when you're voicing the thoughts of a kid, sink into a childish accent or something.

Just to be a smart-alec (yeah I know you've done that joke and my name's not Alec but shut up), I just learned today about synesthesia. It's actually QUITE possible to "smell sound".

Oh, man. I can DO voices! Like, I can. I really want to fit them in. But I haven't been able to at all yet. I'll work them in somehow eventually.

I can do a masterful job with voices and expressing myself vocally.

But coming up with jokes would take me a while, since I'm not much of a note taker and I forget things.

Your facial expression can be part of it. Ex: Obnoxious yelling then a transition to a wide grin. Very useful when telling a story and you want your characters in it animated or have their own role.

And I honestly can't tell you where I heard the Wal-Mart joke. I dont know if it was that exactly, but it just sounds like it was done before somewhere.

So. I finally got around to uploading the ROOMHATES Blooper Reel.

It wouldn't work on Youtube... they would claim the song was a copyright infringement and delete the audio, and we had already deleted the file itself so we couldn't just change the song. And we were too lazy to remake the blooper reel.

So it remained a DVD exclusive until we realized we could upload it to Facebook.

And I've put that off for a while.

But now, it's up.

We had a lot of fun filming.

RIDING THE CLUTCH

It's 28 minutes long and in three parts, so I don't really expect ANYONE to watch it. But people will, unfortunately. It's basically an entirely improvised mockumentary, and it has a few good moments, but overall... meh. It was fun to film, at least.

There was some lame crap that happened between compressing the video and uploading it to Youtube that ended up cutting out some title cards (including the first one that says the title of the video! Crapola!)... so yeah, that's lame.

I've toyed with idea a lot in the past, and I think it'd be cool to actually do it.

I set it up right now but I'm not gonna' actually start using it 'till April 12th.

I'm also trying to think of a good name for it. As of right now, I like "Alec Robbins: The Blog" since it's not really about anything in particular. I had "The Green Blog" at one point, too.

Anyway, I made a fun little logo. I might add a lot more of those little phrases to it.
