Energy sabers use a crystalline matrix fuel to power the blade.
This is a long lasting fuel, but it deteriorates during use. In the X series the rate of deterioration is probably constant, so interference (striking targets) shouldn't decrease the lifespan any faster.
Zero does not start out with an energy saber; he gets it in X2 (or X3?). It is brand new and shiny, and perhaps the strongest of its kind.
It is of note that it can output enough power to destroy most reploids in one or two hits. This means that in one pass, the blade can actually tear through thick armor.
Later in the games, X4 and on, the blade's power continually decreases, increasing the number of hits required to tear through armor and strike sensitive parts.
Zero probably gets a new blade every now and then past X6, although none of them seem to be as strong as his original (perhaps Wily made that blade?).

Looking past that theoretical BS, I think Zero likes swords, and he collects them and uses each new one, but he keeps his first one because he loves it, and it has pajamas and a glass of milk before bed.
