I managed to get a shiny Ditto in Gold, I thought that breeding it with other pokemon would make them shiny. No go.

It actually increases the chances by quite a bit.

I think what they mean by "slide-out" is that, like with mobile phone keyboards, the control stuff would slide from under the screen. I'm not sure what I think about that.

I've known about Beatles Rock Band for a long time but pushed it out of my memory like I try to do with anything I'm excited for.

It wasn't originally going to be branded under the Rock Band name because they didn't want that association despite being CREATED by them, but I'm glad they chose to label it such.
