You do realize you can delete your browsing history, right? Clear private data?

By parental control, do you mean actual software that's limiting what you can do?

Threaten to kill yourself if they don't lay off.

Hold a knife to your wrist for effect, and don't forget to cry out "YOU'RE SUFFOCATING ME!"

I think this will work out for you.

Until you have your own computer, absolutely nothing?

If your parents are going to be monitoring your crap, they'll notice if you figure out how to disable the controls. Contrary to popular belief, parents have half a brain.

You could always use proxy sites or input the site's IP in the address bar, that's all I can say. Though if your parents are actually using a decent program to block sites then those things would be disabled too.

Contrary to popular belief, parents have half a brain.

Which is exactly why, when I was your age, if my parents didn't like the music I was listening to, I would calmly state my argument. Focus on the content of the songs being nothing but words, and something that you're mature enough to understand is wrong, so on and so forth.

Then again, I'm not sure how old you are, so I'm making assumptions regarding your maturity level.

Personally, I still think you should consider the fake suicide threat thing, KT (KT... Kay Tee... Katie).

It will be the best way to show your parents you're mature enough to listen to whatever garbage you listen to.

Your only options are to either kill yourself or wait for old age to do it.

Seriously, his parents just want to keep him clean and miserable, who are we to stop them from fulfilling their parental duty?

Right. I don't care about him enough to help him out. Plus, I'm sure if they found out that he circumvented whatever rules they forced on him by finding out how to do so here, he wouldn't be allowed back here again.

Plus it's none of my business. And they could have any reason to not allow him to go around freely on the net. Like there's a guy who comes into the store who isn't allowed to look at the mature stuff, not because he's too young but because his parents say so (probably because he's slow mentally).

Get iTunes, get an iPod, buy the songs, end of story.  If they don't like it, give them a reasonable argument.  If they don't agree, then just listen to other music.  You can't listen to only one genre of music your entire life.

Get a load of spyware and viruses and then point out that this is somehow part of the parental control bull##### and you couldn't do anything about it.

Guaranteed to get it removed.

It may run you $50-100 depending on local service fees to fix the second upcoming problem though. *thumbs*

Or better yet, just do the good ol' fashioned "constantly opening command prompt" program.  It eventually crashes the computer.  Just make it, replace every icon on your desktop with a shortcut to it, and tell your parents you can't fix it otherwise. It's GENIUS!

Children should not disobey their parents without a decent reason. There is a reason wisdom comes with age (this is not to say all parents are wiser than children, but I doubt the opposite is true in kingtrickster's case).

Parental controls and history viewing are a little extreme, and invade the privacy that the parents themselves would have had when they were children.
It is not possible to know what your children are doing all the time, and it should not be. They should be allowed to make their own decisions and mistakes after a certain age. 15 is definitely above that.

On the other hand, the world is filled with stupid teenagers who have too much freedom.

Parental controls are a fine thing, I think, if you really want to be strict (and keep your files safe), but it needs to be backed up by a strict parent; you cannot let machines do what humans should be doing themselves.
On the other hand, viewing browser history is invasive (although this can be circumvented in some instances by the child), and is not a practice I condone.

I suspect that our topic starter's parents are divorced, and this person goes back and forth between each house.
Obviously he is a problem child, for numerous reasons we see laying about the thread.
I wouldn't have been so eager to help him.

Just plunk your kid in front of the TV, switch it to some Nanalan or something and you're good to go. You don't even need to look at it anymore, all you have to do is fill its cheerios trough once in awhile!

Well, yes and no.
On one hand it seems superficially stupid. It doesn't seem important at first...

... But religion is an extremely important thing to people; conflicts in the way someone believes the world work can separate people, so it does make a lot of sense that they would separate

But that's irrelevant to the discussion.
What are you trying to look at that you need the controls off?

He's mentioned a couple times that the blocked sites are music- or art-related.

KT:

I have a few suggestions.

When your parents complain about your music, ask them to give you a song or artist in the style of music they'd like to see you interested in, and listen to it. This only works, however, if you actually listen respectfully to the music they suggest, and form an opinion based on the music they've offered, rather than you feeling like they're forcing you to not listen to yours.

Yes, you're generally old enough to be considered to "know better" than to do something because you heard it in a song, but if your parents object so much to it, then there must be something driving their opinion, too. I heartily support sitting down with each parent, and having an honest, calm heart-to-heart.

Oftentimes, parents become stricter if they feel their kids are becoming more distant, because they realize more and more that you're going to be old enough to leave them completely soon, and whether it's driven by them losing control (which is a lot less likely than some would have us think), or losing you, it's something parents have to deal with, and it's quite frankly stressful for them.

Also, you are 15. You're at an age which is considered very impressionable, and you're at a point where a lot of freedoms of choice are opening up to you. Chances are, your parents are concerned about what is influencing you, and what you are choosing to be exposed to.

Sorry if this ended up like a lecture, it wasn't intended to be. I grew up with a very close relationship with my mother, and she and I talked about things like this a lot, especially when I was trying to break away a bit and become my own adult.

I'm surprised no one has thought that MAYBE his parents don't want him listening to whatever music they don't approve of not because of the lyrical content, but because it SUCKS.

Anyway I agree with Chron, and that is why I'm not helping Katie out.

You'd be amazed, XJ.

Then again, up here, only the local gang members and homeless youth tend to listen to any (c)rap. And I do mean that C, wholeheartedly. People do listen to good rap, but they usually listen to a lot of other stuff, too.

We're predominantly "scene" (read: Emo and/or alternapop) and true indy here. We spawned Death Cab for Cutie (who are directly linked to the formation of the Postal Service), and have ties to (or direct links to) several other bands.

We also have a live music bar, but that's mostly for the 21-pluses who don't hang out at the all-hours café.

Damn. I just realized that I missed listening to the Red Elvises from across the street (of said live music bar) on the 18th. ;_;

The predominant thing usually involves dancable stuff.

I say #####ing deal with it. You'll turn eighteen one of these days, and move the ##### out of their controlling household. I mean you can #####ing deal with it. Even if you can't...

Deal with it.

Once you are an adult you can do what you want. With or without the boundaries of the law. You are 15, that leaves you with three years. That gives you time to get your ##### together. If you are, as you say, 'not a problem child', then you know that you have no choice but to deal with it and learn from it, knowing that one day you may not going to approve of your child's choice in music, and only causing a fight will make things worse.

Also, if you want to ##### with your parents with extreme consequences, follow lunche's advice while listening to boy bands or pop music. start quoting songs, wear makeup, and scream randomly for the voices to shut up.
