I can't compare X8 to X6, unless you mean the story. The story is horrid.
But in terms of gameplay and enjoyment, it was nice and welcoming. Aside from the fact that 2 of the stages were gimmicky junk, it was enjoyable to play. It's definitely better than X6 and X7.
I'd say it's close to X5 with me. Last time I played X5, I got a little bored and a little annoyed, but that's because there are some similar problems. Thing about X5 though, the storyline is less crap, since Inafune actually wanted X5 to exist, unlike anything beyond X6.
Your best bet in the whole series is X1-X4. I only suggest X5 and X8 to those who want a little more. X6 was a disappointment, and I own X7 but haven't played it all through. It just sits on my shelf as a collection item basically.
But to be fair, I'm aware that's like taking dog poop, putting it on a base, calling it a trophy, and then placing it in glass for all to admire.
