Title: No More Heroes
Post by: Johncarllos on 20 December 2007, 00:52:53
Basically, it's GTA for the Wii with assassins instead of gangs, and laser swords instead of guns.
I'm pumped for it, it's cell shaded (which I'm not a HUGE fan of, but it works for the wii), it's free roaming, and overall looks like a solid action title for the Wii, to be released in February.

Discuss.

Really?
I feel the opposite.

ASR, don't judge a book by its' cover.  Do you even know who's making No More Heroes? SUDA51. SUDA-freakin'-51. The guy who made Killer7, which was a pretty bad ass game, even though it was one of the most awkward rail shooters in history.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: ASR on 20 December 2007, 01:00:54
The only reason GTA was fun is because it was a sandbox game and it was the first real QUALITY one.
Sandbox games aren't fun anymore. I give them chances, but I'm constantly disappointed.

And I never played Killer7, that looked stupid to me as well.

Trevor Touchdown > You, ASR, right now.

No More Heroes is going to be one kick ass game.

SO WAS YOUR FACE, from what I've seen.

Reminds me of Killer7.

EDIT: Stop freaking posting so I can friggen comment. srsly.

BUT I LIKE HEROES

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Johncarllos on 20 December 2007, 01:03:32
I liken it to GTA:SA mostly, that you can change your outfit, work out, buy new stuff, upgrade weapons etc...
It's a watered down GTA for the Wii....

WITH FREAKIN' ENERGY SWORDS!

Title: Re: No More Heroes

Reminds me of Killer7.

Because it's made by the same guy.

Trevor Touchdown > You, ASR, right now.

No More Heroes is going to be one kick ass game.

Travis. His name is Travis. Travis Touchdown, not Trevor.

Reminds me of Killer7.

Like I just got done saying, SUDA51.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Johncarllos on 20 December 2007, 01:05:08
I love Heroes.
But this game is awesome in that there ARE heroes!
Which is confusing.

Title: Re: No More Heroes

Reminds me of Killer7.

Yeah. I read.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Johncarllos on 20 December 2007, 01:06:09
Actually, I'd say the weakest thing in the game is the design of Travis. Good thing you can change it.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Captain Sanoguchi on 20 December 2007, 01:08:00
Yeah, I mean Travis does look pretty weak character wise as well.
I mean he's a Weaboo wearing a pink shirt with anime characters all over it who runs around with a light saber that he has to pleasure to turn on.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Johncarllos on 20 December 2007, 01:12:11
Huh, latest article I read had him wearing jeans and a leather jacket with sunglasses (latest Game Informer).

SEE, Mine will be wearing a very hairy chest and a beard with plaid hopefully.

That's #####ing sick! :-D

It's a watered down GTA for the Wii....

That.. not so much. :-|

But I'll rent it, I love free roam games and customizable #####. It sounds good. Does it still look like Killer 7? I remember a preview ages ago but I don't know if it's the same anymore. That style is cool but for what this game sounds like, eh, I could take or leave.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Johncarllos on 20 December 2007, 11:34:25
I really thought of GTA when I saw a screen of it and the map in the bottom left is just like the one from GTA3, and a shot of Travis running down an alleyway with a glowing 'shop' icon in front of a door. Biggest difference I think, stealing cars may not be in the game, I have no idea as of right now.
It still has that cell-shaded Killer 7 look, as far as I know.
*looks at article in Game Informer*

I see what you mean about the pink shirt.
But on the same page there is a shot of him uppercutting a guy with his sword, and he's spraying gratutitous amounts of blood everywhere. Kill Bill style and then some.
The same guy has coins pouring into the air from his corpse.
Yay for money?

Also, what I can tell from the article is that enemies can wield cro-bars, energy knuckles (like brass knucks except there is an energy beam like the sword, ouch), Rocket launchers, and pistols.
I love free roaming games.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Abominator on 20 December 2007, 14:08:55
Killer7 really wasn't that good...

Style over substance...

I'll wait-and-see with this one.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Mikero on 20 December 2007, 22:44:06
I really couldn't stand Killer7 very long. The rail crap was just annoying and that kind of gameplay makes me jumpy. So I had my friend who was over take over the controlling and we'd figure out what to do together. But it wasn't long after that (in fact it was just after fighting that boss who spews those exploding redead things at you) that we were both tired of it.

Other than the style, I have to say the other cool thing in the game was the line "I'm a cleaner. I can feel no remorse from seeing a dead body."

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Johncarllos on 20 December 2007, 23:14:08
Well, the game plays nothing like Killer 7 nor has much of the elements.
I need some good sword fighting.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Mikero on 20 December 2007, 23:53:33
I know, I was just talking about K7.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Johncarllos on 21 December 2007, 00:40:29
Oh, alright then.
Killer 7 is pretty boring.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Captain Sanoguchi on 21 December 2007, 00:54:59
Okay, whatever, but you have to admit, Killer7 had a story that actually had some balls. I know most people don't play game's for story, but plenty of effort was put into the production of Killer7, can we just all keep that in mind?

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Mikero on 21 December 2007, 01:09:02
The story from what I got through was interesting and boring at the same time. But I didn't get far.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Captain Sanoguchi on 21 December 2007, 01:21:17
Oh, believe me, the story gets better. Like with black guys with Tentacle Afros, an old man who goes around shooting girls and harvesting there organs, then his weaboo daughter comes and tries to kill you, and then Japan gets nuked if you make the right choices.
Games in which Japan gets destroyed are awesome.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Mikero on 21 December 2007, 01:24:48
The RIGHT choices? Haa...

Why does Japan always get nuked? That like never happens in other places.

Anyway I liked the mask guy.

Title: Re: No More Heroes

Sure. His name is a bit on the nose (see what I did there :-D) if you ask me.

Wait, Japan gets nuked in a game made by Japan?

Geez...

...

No offence, Nove, but that comment was as dumb as telling someone with an accent that you wish you had an accent.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: ASR on 22 December 2007, 03:52:06
Is it bad that I truly wish I had a British accent?

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Mikero on 22 December 2007, 08:42:59
No, but you can't go to someone and be like "I wish I had an accent like you" because they'll just be like "You have an accent, I don't". Accents are all perspective if it's different dialects of the same language.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Slugkid on 22 December 2007, 16:05:25
Agreed.
In Argentina, you don't have british or american accent... You simply have english accent...

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Abominator on 22 December 2007, 17:20:00
I have still yet to hear what this "British accent" sounds like.

Maybe it's people from Europe that have it.

You know... London and Paris.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Mikero on 22 December 2007, 17:54:51
Apparently it's people from England that have it as if there was one unified dialect of English there.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: ASR on 22 December 2007, 21:54:01
No, but you can't go to someone and be like "I wish I had an accent like you" because they'll just be like "You have an accent, I don't". Accents are all perspective if it's different dialects of the same language.

Oh, I see what you mean, now. I feel terrible that I'd never thought of that. I've never been in an experience like that, though, but now I have protection.

As for the whole "British accent" thing, around where I live and anywhere else I've discussed it, it's generally just agreed to be a stereotypical generalization of, well, leave me alone. It's the term used to describe it around here. I at least understand that it's a pretty broad statement, and I know how it could be seen as ignorant, but that's just the lingo for it.

If it were up to me, I'd say it was an English accent, but since English is a dominant LANGUAGE of the US, most people just call it a British accent.

My apologies, yowza.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Mikero on 23 December 2007, 20:13:24
English accent wouldn't be accurate either, because greater London alone doesn't even have one dialect, so you can imagine how diversified all of England is.

The release date of No More Heroes has been pushed up. To avoid having its' ass kicked in stores by Brawl the release date has been changed to January 22nd.

5 days till.

Travis Touchdown destroys the 4th wall. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doSU1MJ1m-8)
The Opening, pretty neat.

Travis kills things and says naughty words. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGsA6qJBV0Q&NR=1)
Some gameplay. He saves on the toilet.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Johncarllos on 20 January 2008, 19:16:50
From what I've seen, it'll be worth getting, but I'm still not entirely sure.
The fact that the overworld has no real function besides going place to place kind of ruins it, I wanted a crap ton of fun little distracting side missions or 'collect all of these for a prize' types of things.

Not to mention it's called Santa Destroy.
I'm still definately gonna buy it, but I don't expect to keep it for too long, so if somebody talks to me in a month or two-- once I've beaten it, I might sell it to ya cheap.

Title: Re: No More Heroes

7.8

The game is getting good reviews. I'll know for sure if I'll get this game by Friday or Saturday.

Posted on: 22 January 2008, 21:53:07

Even more review scores, this time from magazines:

EDGE (who are notorious for harsh reviews) gave it 9/10, same with GamePro (and some obscure magazine). Gametrailers gives it a 8.2 and Ngamer gives it 9.4.

Lookin' good.

Good choice.

Posted on: 23 January 2008, 03:28:58

Well, I just spent 3 hours playing NMH. Better than I expected. T-Shirts kick ass. There's actually a reason to the overworld map other than to get from place to place, lots of secrets to find. Dialogue and voice acting are great. Controls are easy once you get the hang of it. Boss fights kick so much ass. The slot machine thing kicks ass, transforming into the alternate modes of Travis is way too fun, seriously, get all BAR and you'll ##### yourself. Yeah, I'd go on about it more, but I haven't gone too far in yet. I might have all day to play it tomorrow since roads might freeze. I'll make an in-depth review once I finish the game. Oh yeah, there's actually more than one song in the game.

The thing about censors is you don't immediately know which word was used unless you guess right the first time. It provides an amusing short-lived margin of misinterpretation.

I'm checking the electronics section of the nearest store tomorrow, because it's decent walking distance. If it's not there I can wait on it because I just got two other games.

Yeah, the t-shirts are bitchin'. Just like all the random Killer7 references.
More importantly I have new wisdom to share with you all, the boss fights only get more and more epic. Oh yeah, Travis likes to go Darth Vader on school girls and cut their hands off, he also enjoys carrying headless women around at the beach while he tells them he loves their soul.

Posted on: 25 January 2008, 05:25:36

'Kay, I just finished No More Heroes. Way too epic. I'll type out a big review this weekend, right now I need some sleep. 'Kay, so while I'm sleeping everyone else go out and buy it.

I just beat the first bit. Out on the motorcycle for the first time.

I must say, the collision detection with passing cars is pretty cruddy.

Oh, and I'm playing on Mild to start with. I hate it when things are too easy and I doubt I'm going to play through a second time.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Captain Sanoguchi on 27 January 2008, 04:18:08
Yeah, I know the collision detection is terrible, but that's about the only problem.
Yeah, I'm thinkin' I'm just not going to finish it the second time, it's just gotten boring and tedious.
Also, it looks to me like there isn't any difference between Clear Mode after the ending and Clear Mode after the real ending.

No, it gets tedious after about 17 hours, but those first 17 hours are one wild ride.

I really don't like any of the overworld stuff, and the motorcycle drives like #####.

However, the gameplay, combat, and style is freakin' awesome. It's a VERY fresh experience.

Post by: Captain Sanoguchi on 27 January 2008, 23:03:10
Yeah, the overworld is lame, we all know. The combat is where it's at. Just wait till you upgrade and get a better Beam Katana, pretty soon you'll be killing at least three enemies in one slash, but only if they're close by when you land a finishing blow.

I'm definitely gonna rent it first then.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Captain Sanoguchi on 28 January 2008, 05:16:25
Yeah, I'm thinkin' it's a great game and should be more than just a rental, but it might as well just be a rental. 'Cause it's great, but after you play through it once it really turns into a meh experience, I mean it's still fun to play, but you just don't really want to play it as much.

I went out and sold a good chunk of games for it.
I'm now going to fight the #1 dude, I just ended Bad Girl. That was tough crap.
Good game so far, I hope the ending is great...

Well, this morning I finished Mild. Now I'm just going to play Bitter. There had better be GrassHopper Man at the end of this.

These might be considered as spoilers to some. Yeah, just some comparisons between the censored and the uncensored version.

Oh yeah, here's something that isn't in the American version of NMH, I think it's only in the Japanese version, but I don't know. In the American version in its' place is the first NMH trailer. I actually like the original trailer more than this, so yay America.

Heavenly Star (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL2od1AF_Cs)

You might recognize the song from like every store in Santa Destroy.

Posted on:  3 February 2008, 21:40:44

You know how I said America was awesome because we got the blood version? Well, Japan got something we didn't, other than Heavenly Star.
They got a manual that's actually interesting. Anyone who has the game should notice how the North American manual is black and white and boring. Well, the Japanese get a fairly interesting Manga for an instruction manual.

Some translated scans...

Cover (http://www.imagesfly.com/images/1201138356-nmhcoverzn6.jpg)
Page 1 (http://www.imagesfly.com/images/1201138356-nmhcomic1vg0.jpg)
Page 2 (http://www.imagesfly.com/images/1201138356-nmhcomic2sj6.jpg)

That's all I could find. I know it's not great, but it's better than our black and white sleep inducing manual.
Yeah, I'm starting to lose interest in NMH, I never thought I would, it's just too awesome. But, I've beaten everything and it seems you get nothing for beating everything, but I'm still going to look for a few more days. I can't give up on GrassHopperMan.

Title: Re: No More Heroes
Post by: Johncarllos on 9 February 2008, 00:34:23
Those scans are coooolio.
I'm probably going to trade this in when I get Brawl, lest one of you folks wants to buy it.

If you don't keep NMH for the rest of your life you'll make Suda 51 cry. I mean dude, don't toss something away just because you've used it once and are bored with it. Keep it, and enjoy it again in the future.

Strange jobs = Money
Killing people = More money

It's the same way in real life.

'Kay. Now for something for those who couldn't hear Travis' monologue during the battle with DeathMetal.

This count... I feel as if I'm looking at my future self.
Mega bucks, big ass house, fast cars...
Dinning in style with a world class chef and a trusty nutritionist counting every calorie.
A team of hot yoga instructors to keep me in shape.
Nurses to attend to my body.
Maids and loyal servants at my beck and call.
On the weekends, tanned babes knocking on my door every two hours.
Everyday full of excitement and luxury.
That'd be the life.
Everything in its right place.
It's the perfect life.
It's the life of winners.
That'll be my life.
I thirst for selflessness.
Hypocrites lusting for their own desires get killed by young rookies like me.
This is how it goes down.
And for the old killers, they'll croak anyway.
I guess you can call this a comedy.
I realize there's really nothing here for me.
But what else can I do but keep going?
Maybe I should have been a little more careful before I jumped in.
Gotta find the exit.
Gotta find that exit to paradise.
But, I can't see it.
I can't see anything.
There's this sense of doom running down my spine like it's...
Like it's trying to suck the life out of me.
I need to get rid of it before I bail.
Something deeper...
Deeper than my instincts is taunting me.
Can't find the exit.
Can't find the exit.
Can't find the exit.
Can't find the exit.
Can't find the ext.

Suda sure can write 'em.

I'm looking forward to NMH. After reading stories and posts about it, I've concluded it's a lot like GTA. Now all I have to do is hope the guys at the White House won't make the same conclusion as I have and get on NMH's back.

If you ever saw the video Sano (or maybe it was WIND) posted, some kid was complaining about it, defining the blood and gore being replaced by "pixie-dust".
